How Does Core Cool Systems Keep Cows Comfortable Year-Round?

Core Cool Systems: Practical Solutions for Seasonal Ventilation Challenges.

Maintaining proper ventilation in dairy barns is essential to cow health and productivity, not just in the peak heat of summer or the coldest winter days, but also during the fluctuating temperatures of spring and fall. Adding Core Cool Systems to the barn’s ventilation setup gives dairy producers a reliable, four-season solution that automatically adjusts to changing conditions, helping keep cows within their thermal comfort zone year-round. In North America, Core Cool Systems collaborates with Sun-North Systems, which brings 39 years of experience in designing, manufacturing and installing quality ventilation products, such as curtains, panels and chimneys, creating a healthy barn environment every season.

Seasonal Shifts and Barn Ventilation Challenges
Spring and fall can bring unpredictable weather, from random warm days to cool, damp nights. These fluctuations can create discomfort and stress for cows if not managed well. Core Cool Systems offers an adaptable solution that automatically adjusts airspeed based on the barn’s temperature. When the temperature reaches 8°C (46°F), for example, the system can be set to run at 30% capacity, ensuring consistent airflow that helps keep the barn dry by reducing moisture and condensation. Even on hot days in these shoulder seasons, the system’s evaporative cooling function helps cows stay comfortable and productive.

“We were planning to winterize the misters in early Nov, but life got busy, and we didn’t get that done.
The week of Nov 10th in Northern Ontario, it was 22C. The fans were going from 30% to 100% power, and the misters were coming on between 11 am and 2 pm. The cows were so comfortable that they didn’t even notice the fluctuation in the temperature because the system was keeping them in their comfort zone. The next week, we had snow and were closing the barn…Having a system that is fully automated and controlled by the temperature in the barn means we could get on with the busy work of harvest and know that the cows were comfortable in the barn. I can’t put a price on that piece of mind.” Collingwood, ON

A Balanced Approach to Airflow and Humidity Control
Unlike single-phase systems, Core Cool’s variable-speed technology lets the system run efficiently, minimizing energy use during lower-demand periods. Certain Core Cool units operate on less energy than a 70-watt light bulb when running at lower speeds. This energy-efficient, controlled airflow not only keeps the barn environment fresh but also supports a dry, well-ventilated space by reducing excess humidity and condensation buildup on surfaces.

Core Cool also incorporates a simple-to-use controller with a built-in Temperature-Humidity Index (THI) sensor, allowing the system to adjust water application based on temperature and humidity levels. The evaporative cooling system can be activated as needed to help keep cows in their optimal thermal comfort zone. On unseasonably warm days, like ones in late October this year when temperatures reached 24°C/ 75°F in Ontario, Canada, the evaporative cooling function was fully operational, illustrating the system’s flexibility even as seasons change.

Reliable, Low-Maintenance Performance
Designed for simplicity and durability, Core Cool features a direct-drive, sealed motor that requires minimal maintenance. This dependable EC (electronically commutated) motor includes advanced internal electronic speed control, providing variable speed without needing an external variable speed drive, which virtually eliminates the risk of stray voltage. The system operates with little upkeep, allowing producers to focus on other priorities. Once set for the season, the Core Cool controller needs minimal adjustment, making it an easy choice for consistently managing barn climate through spring, summer, and fall.
